Thoughts on the Big E3 Conferences

Sony and Microsoft were fairly close.

Microsoft’s first hour was amazing: a ton of new games, trailers, and gameplay. The last hour was okay: some Xbox Live stuff and Project Natal. I think I would have been more impressed with Natal if I didn’t see it after Sony’s conference (which I did) but although the tech is more impressive, the software they showed wasn’t. I do think that Microsoft benefits from being able to solely focus on Xbox, while Sony has to focus on 2-3 platforms depending on if they’re talking about sales (3) or games (2).

Sony, on the other hand, had amazing gameplay AC2, GOW3 and and particularly Uncharted 2. The motion control demos were quite fun and the ModNation demo was amazing. Nothing except the Conviction demo in the Xbox conference impressed me as much as any of those four demos.

Nintendo’s conference was short and sweet. The big games look great (and I’m looking forward to playing it) but in terms of new stuff only Metroid impressed me.

So, ultimately, I went with Sony because I had much lower expectations going in.
