TV Log: Sept 28 - Oct 4
Caution, spoilers below.
Pretty solid Monday. House was good, as usual. Interesting to see how Foreman took over House’s role and how the rest of the team responded to it. Being the man in charge isn’t as easy as it looks. Looks like we’ll see House back in the office soon. Heroes needs to do something, quickly. The episode showed some promise (re-introduction of Sylar, etc) but...

Fall 2009 TV Schedule and Preliminary Thoughts
I wonder how I can keep up with this aggressive TV schedule…
Sunday (2 Hours)
- Californication: Totally forgot that this was premiering tonight but definitely excited. This show is always a good time.
- Entourage: Probably the weakest season of the show but still a Very Good one. The last fourth has been amazing though. I could watch Ari and Lloyd go at it for 30 minutes
- Mad Men:...

Thoughts on Bruno: Why it's no Borat but still...
Note: I don’t think I cover anything not mentioned in reviews but I’d recommend not reading it (or reviews in general) to avoid surprises.
I haven’t seen Borat since it aired in theaters, but I remember leaving the theater thinking it was extremely hilarious and succeeded at highlighting some of America’s prejudice (especially in the South).
Bruno had a number of truly...

Media Log: Recent DVDs Edition
Caught up on some DVDs recently. It’s quite amazing what expectations can do for movie enjoyment.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (**): I knew this wouldn’t be amazing but I thought it would be cheesy in a Dead or Alive movie sort-of-way. I originally gave it three stars (I Liked It) but moved it down to 2 because there really wasn’t anything memorable about the movie....

Media Log: Catchup Edition
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (****): Saw this on IMAX sitting way too close to the screen. It made it a bit tough to tell what was going on at all times (though I hear this was a common complaint despite where you were sitting). Nonetheless, I was only expecting big robots, good action scenes, and massive explosions. Michael Bay delivered the goods. I was pleasantly surprised with the...

More iPhone 3GS Impressions: VoiceOver Rocks!
I mentioned in the original article that VoiceOver was nifty but not incredibly practical unless they built support into the earphones. To my surprise, since Apple hasn’t promoted this at all, VoiceOver is indeed built into the earphones.
The earphones are a mixture of last year’s included set which let you pause, skip, and go back by hitting the main button. They also include the...

Spotlight: iPhone 3GS
Picked up a 32GB iPhone 3GS this morning and so far I’m impressed. In terms of usefulness to me:
Safari speed performance: The processor speed bump have helped Safari tremendously. Using the same Wi-Fi connection, the 3GS loaded IGN Xbox 360 (a very complex webpage) in 16 seconds, compared to 1 minute 12 seconds for the 3G (i.e. over 4.5 times faster). I noticed similar (though less...

Media Log: Weekend Box Office (6/12-6/14)
I’ve been watching a lot of movies recently that I haven’t really blogged about so consider this post an update on my movie-watching as well as commentary from last weekend’s box office.
1. The Hangover (5/5 - I Loved It) - $33.4 million: I was glad and impressed to see how strongly The Hangover debuted last weekend but this second weekend showing is even more impressive. Shows...

Spotlight: Palm Pre Hands-On Impressions
I checked one out today for some 40 or so minutes (small Sprint store, rather empty). I’m extremely impressed, especially by how fast the applications are (though it could be Sprint v. AT&T). If Palm can develop its App Store, Apple will have its first real competitor. The phone is a breeze to use and very elegant. Some impressions:
Browser: Browser is solid 50% faster than iPhone....

Thoughts on the Big E3 Conferences
Sony and Microsoft were fairly close.
Microsoft’s first hour was amazing: a ton of new games, trailers, and gameplay. The last hour was okay: some Xbox Live stuff and Project Natal. I think I would have been more impressed with Natal if I didn’t see it after Sony’s conference (which I did) but although the tech is more impressive, the software they showed wasn’t. I do...

Thoughts on the Motion Control Battle
As expected, Nintendo showed WiiMotion Plus, which upgrades Wii’s motion control functionality to include 1:1 control. Sony offered something very similar, while Microsoft showed a controller-less full-body motion control system. Here are my thoughts on all three:
WiiMotionPlus is essentially delivering the PlayStation Motion Control tech right now, as opposed to a year from now. It can...
